I've heard that as well, but most of the Orthodox people I know don't believe that/follow it. Was it a Chabad/Lubavich site? I think they're into that, and they're big on educating people about family purity.
There may be some deeper rationale for the no stuffed non-kosher animals--there are some wacky bits of esoteric reasoning that go on in Judaism, IMNSHO.
