Dec. 23rd, 2006 05:07 pmGenerally* I don't think about the winter solstice as the longest night/shortest day of the year--I think about it as the point at which the days begin getting longer again. I guess that could be a glass half-full/glass half-empty sort of thing, but after doing some reading I realized that (obviously, but I'd never thought about this before) winter solstice happens before the coldest, harshest months of winter. Some of the tradition is about partying and making merry before freezing and/or starving your butt off. I'm not sure where that leaves me...
