[livejournal.com profile] respect_otters writes some very good pieces on abortion and abortion rights. (And about other stuff too, but this is her most recent topic.)

The first piece is about a New Yorker article discussing the absolute nature of South Dakota's abortion ban and the dilemma it creates: A person who professes to be pro-life but insists on a rape-and-incest exception (which covers most pro-life politicians in this country, including President Bush) is saying one of two things: either it is justifiable to kill children in some circumstances, or what grows in a woman's uterus is a child if the woman had sex voluntarily but not if she was forced into it.

The second is a response to someone who questioned the logic in loving one's own, already-born child while advocating abortion rights (er, "vehement declarations that other children are disposable" according to the commenter).

Very well done, both.

Totally off-topic, but you have no recent public entries...well, sort of on the topic of termination...Toastie has been terminated, but Dave still would like to read your protected stuff

I set something, somewhere (default privacy setting?) so that the default post is friends-only...I had some reasoning behind it, though I can't remember it entirely at the moment. (When I started this journal ages ago, the idea was that everything would be public, but that since no one on lj really knew me in any capacity, it didn't matter--but things have changed somehow.)

Anyway, Dave has been added.

Why the, uh, termination, if you don't mind my asking?

Two reasons, I think (I've been asking myself why). First, I've been Toastie for a dozen years. I've chosen to embrace it whereas I could've let the college nickname die a long time ago. It's part of every internet and computer ID I create and even people at work know me by it. But part of me would really like to be known as Dave, and since LJ is a big part of me these days, it seemed a good place to make the chance. Second, I've been very depressed in the past week, and terminating toastie97 seemed kinda violent and cathartic without actually doing any real harm to myself.

Glad you asked, because I needed to think about it. And thanks for the add.
