It's so much fun to project:
"Meoooooooow! Meowwwwwww!"
"George, what do you want? A puppy? I'm sorry, we can't get a puppy right now."
(I do some variation of this about 3-4 times a day. It amuses my mom, too, who misses our dog that died two years ago and has been vacillating about getting a new dog.)

"Oh, Widge, I know, it's SO HARD to be a cat. I'm really FULL OF SYMPATHY for you. My heart is just melting, right here, on the floor. And no, you can't go up into the attic right now, it's 10F up there."

We're softies around here, though. If the cat scratches and meows enough, we open the attic door for him...and open it again when he gets tired of it and wants to come back down.
