And then I realized it was on the edge of the football field of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, one of the magnet science-and-engineering high schools here, known to most as Poly.

I realized tonight that the heavy emphasis on reward and punishment and forgiveness that I grew up with, even if mostly in the Bible and not enacted on or by me, seeped into my being quite a bit.  I think that's where a lot of my seriousness and rigidity about certain things comes from.  I was wandering around in the kitchen tonight and had some sort of aural-only flashback from 5th or 6th grade with the words "he is forgiven," part of some prescribed biblical regimen of doing X and Y and Z to atone.  I mean, really, learning in great detail and seriousness about throwing a goat off a cliff, when you're 11?

I had this realization that most of the world isn't like that. Most people don't see things that seriously because they don't have that sort of thinking embedded into their brains.

A while ago I was going to start using twitter and then I stopped because I was going to try to use a private twitter account to keep a record of when I felt fatigued. Last night I realized that it seems I haven't really been feeling that kind of fatigue in a while - I haven't tweeted anything about it. Granted, it might be the wired anxiety of the past week and a half counteracting any tiredness, but I prefer to think the iron (and maybe vitamin D) supplements are doing their magic.  Yay.  YAY.

n.b. to people reading this: serum ferritin levels can matter even if you have lots of hemoglobin.  At least that's what my anecdata says.
n.b. n.b.: "anecdata" is an awesome word

*I take iron with vitamin C and also often try to eat a grapefruit (yes, a whole one, they're delicious and only 50 cents and why bother storing half in the fridge?) around the same time.

I had a weird exchange with someone last week. We were at a club which had a platter of free cake (it's a strange club) and I declined a piece. 
"You don't eat cake?" she asked.
"I do," I said, "but I don't like bakery cake." 
"So every time you eat cake it's homemade?"
"..."

I couldn't explain to her in a minute in that noisy club about the Orthodox community I grew up in and its baking fetish, and how overfrosted cakes made with off-brand Crisco and not enough egg (like bakery cake from any not-gourmet bakery) just can't compare to the sometimes-dumpy looking things that come out of real people's kitchens.

For anyone following this story ("Sonoma County CA separates elderly gay couple and sells all of their worldly possessions"), apparently some of it is just humanity being inhuman; Scull and Greene had a home full of priceless antiques, and morally bankrupt Sonoma County representatives saw an opportunity to go in and loot their house. It seems like lots of shitty things happened, like officials somehow compelling a dying, dementia-stricken man to appoint a conservator of his estate even though he had a partner, and then people lying to courts to say that that partner had dementia himself and having him locked up in a dementia ward.

How can people do that? What in the world is going on in their heads to be so disrespectful to elderly people?

I was flipping through Newsweek in my doctor's waiting room today. They had an article about the iPad, and in it they had a blurb where they interviewed Steve Wozniak.  Quoth (well, paraphraseth) Steve: "I solved the battery life and lack-of multi-tasking issues on the iPhone.  I have two, and when the battery runs out or I need to multi-task, I use the other one."

Ahahahaha.

I found myself needing to type a bit on an iPhone (not mine) the other day and I couldn't stand it.  If there were any question in my mind about ever wanting one, it's gone.  I don't like touchscreens and I particularly don't like touchscreens that have zero give like the hard glossy iPhone surface.  I think I can generalize this up to the iPad (although we're getting one for the office so soon I'll actually know on that).  I'm hoping that someday the $30/month unlimited internet that can be used with ipads makes its way to the netbook-with-keyboard world soon.  And maybe not on the AT&T network?

I made this Lentil Feta salad just now, and left out the onions because I am lazy and don't really like raw onions all that much anyhow.  It's fine.  (Edit: and the parsley, apprently, because I am forgetful and my parsley was stuff I had in the freezer anyhow.)

Cow's milk feta (Whole Foods' house brand), however, is weird. I'm not a big fan of feta in general, but now I have the remnants of a 1-lb block of it.  I wish it were tomato season, at least. Hmm.

If you've never seen it, Manjula's Kitchen is a fabulous YouTube channel. She shows how to make all sorts of Indian food, and she's very simple and unpretentious (but clear.)

Spearmint has a sharper flavor and more intense aroma, while peppermint tends to be more delicate and sweet

Do you find this true? I don't. I find peppermint much stronger than spearmint.  Spearmint might be sharper, but peppermint is still not "more delicate" to me. And I wouldn't find them interchangeable at all, at least in a recipe that calls for one or another.
