It's probably not a good idea to make assumptions about what other people might be assuming about you.

This page seems like a really great comprehensive/multi-pronged approach to coping with mild depression:

These are delicious and if I can keep myself stocked up on them I'm gonna eat 'em like they're going out of style:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satsuma_%28fruit%29

I'm not sure why they seem to be more reliably sweet than other mandarin oranges, but they do.

I haven't seen any blood oranges yet but once I see 'em I feel a strong and inexplicable need to make this:
http://smittenkitchen.com/2009/01/flaky-blood-orange-tart/

I need to get a food processor, though (I'm hopeless at buttery doughs with a pastry knife).  I have my eye on the 12-cup Kitchenaids but even if I can find one on megasale for $110 that feels like a lot of money. In general I think with that sort of kitchen stuff it makes sense to spend money on rather than buying cheap...my mom still has her Cuisinart from the early 80s, and the motor is still strong even though she uses it to blend frozen-solid chunks of sorbet all the time.  If the bowl hadn't gotten dropped and cracked (not sure who did it, but in this case it wasn't me, fortunately - either my mom or my grandmother), it'd be perfect.

I really need to sort out my mental/emotional money issues. Maybe I'll add that to my list of things I'd like to work on - which isn't a list of new year's resolutions because hey, why not start now?

It did not seem to me to be a time to guard myself
against Love's blows; so I went on
confident, unsuspecting; from that, my troubles
started, amongst the public sorrows
Love discovered me all weaponless,
and opened the way to the heart through the eyes
which are made the passageways and doors of tears
so that it seems to me it does him little honor
to wound me with his arrow in that state,
he not showing his bow at all to you who are armed.

On my current userpic, or, because what Man Ray's Violon d'Ingres really needed* was a Santa hat.

*This statement is funnier if, like me, you have read The Dave Barry Gift Guide, wherein he explains that what da Vinci's The Last Supper really needed was a clock floating over Jesus and the disciples' heads.

I am going to finish sorting through all my stuff and then actually spend money on buying containers for everything that needs to be contained. I never do this, and it is ridiculous. Keeping things tidy is a losing battle if you don't have a place to put each item besides "on that shelf" when there are lots of little items. I'll go to the junk stores on Mission Street first, but if that doesn't do it, I'm gonna go to the Container Store and spend whatever it takes. I'm tired of feeling so disorganized.

I think I asked this at some point last year:

What temperature is it outside where you live?
What temperature is it inside your house?
Do you have heat on?

And an addition:
what tricks do you have for keeping/feeling warm?

I might have just made a huge huge huge order from sierratradingpost.com.

You know how you shouldn't go grocery shopping when you're hungry? You also shouldn't go shopping at places like that when you're cold.  But seriously - they had some Keens that end up like $25 or so once the discounts were applied, and chacos for $41, and random stuff like that. I'm sure I'll return at least some of it.  Also? Smartwool socks for under $5 a pair.  That's AMAZING.

But the main thing: got sheepskin slippers (which turned out to be just $30 somehow) and long underwear.  Yay.

And, um, I might have ordered one of these:

It's called a "couch sack." I've wanted one for two years. It started out with wanting a Snuggie/Slanket (before they became so trendy, er, not trendy but ubiquitous and sold in Walgreens) and then I figured these were even better. We'll see...

Oh, I also ordered a balaclava.  Basically, I am all set to be covered head to toe.  I will look ridiculous, but I will always be warm.

Oh my, I thought Dinosaur kale was the ultimate in kale, but it turns out that red kale is even better. It's even good raw.  I'd had it before, but only cooked or in colcannon. I was gonna steam/stir-fry this stuff, but I had a bite of it raw and it's just fabulous as-is.

And any of it is so much better than the thick, overly-curly ornamental stuff they (bizarrely) sell in most supermarkets...

Kindness. Respect. Assertiveness. Trusting my gut.  Boundaries. Referring to people with whom I have had failed but not insane dates, when meeting them in other contexts while out with friends, as "my friend." Learning from anyone and everyone who has something to teach me (like the concept in the previous sentence.) Smiling when meditating, because I can feel the difference it makes (and my meditation teacher does this also, she wears this unbridled grin most of the time, the likes of which I have only before seen on a blind woman I went to school with.) Avoiding avoidance. Leaving work at work.  Valuing friendships. A lot.

And...oh no, not another learning experience!  Yeah, that too.

This is actually more tasty than some might imagine:

-heaping spoon of MSG-free vegetable broth mix
-spoon of nutritional yeast (srsly, this add to the flavor immensely)
-frozen broccoli
-grated carrot
-small bits of ginger
-water

+microwave

+ instant glass noodles (mung bean vermicelli threads)

Does Netflix give subscribers codes to give out to other people so they can get a one-month free trial instead of the two-week trial?  I'm thinking about (finally) subscribing, so if anyone has such a thing, feel free to send 'em my way.  Except I'm not sure DVDs would fit in my (locked) mailbox, which worries me, especially since we don't have a screen door or another obvious place to hide oversized stuff.

Do you, personally, pronounce "lolcat" as L-O-L-cat or as lollcat?
