My mom was going to send me my w-2s last week.  Then she was going to send them on Monday.  And Tuesday.  She's heading out to the post office now.  I hope I don't owe anything.  I need to go figure that out-she read the numbers to me over the phone.

For what it's worth, you can file for a six-month extension, no excuses needed; apparently it's a pretty simple form.

However, you still have to pay on time.

My point is that if you have the money, but you don't think you will actually know for sure how much you owe by Tuesday, you can find out what form that is, send it, and send some money with it. Then everything gets settled up when you file a real return anytime before October 15. (If you don't pay enough the first time, they charge interest. And maybe penalties. So of course you can get screwed.)

I think that's what my mother was counting on me doing, because that's what she does routinely. Because she never owes money, requesting an extension is simple. I'm hoping I don't owe, because it seems like a pain to calculate how much I owe without actually having the whole business done with.

Somehow from what I've heard of your mother, that doesn't surprise me.

I think the idea behind filing for an extension is that a lot of the time people have a vague idea of how much they'll owe but can't get their act together to compute the exact numbers and fill out the forms by April 15.
