Jun. 29th, 2007 10:57 amI had a dream last night in which someone mentioned that a girl had stolen earrings to wear because she had none. I responded that jewelry is NEVER EVER EVER necessary or a necessity and that if someone is too poor to afford everything they need, they should skip the jewelry. And everyone (there was a crowd) disagreed, encircling me with pointed fingers, screaming that I was crazy. Earrings are important in modern society.
I don't wear jewelry very often. Like, maybe once every month or two I'll put on earrings. And maybe 30% of the time when I get "dressed up" I'll wear jewelry. The same goes for makeup. I've noticed recently that when I do wear jewelry or makeup, people I know compliment me on it. And I don't think it's that the jewelry or makeup is especially well-done, it's just that they're in favor of jewelry and makeup because I'm of the female sex and over age 12. Complimenting me would presumably help reinforce the jewelry-and-makeup-wearing behavior that I display on rare occasions.
I don't like that. It's disingenuous. (If these people think I should wear makeup or jewelry, maybe they should say that. And then I'd say "We do not share your opinion. Your opinion is important to us, but not important enough that we will change our behavior. Thank you for you input." Or something. )
