two things
Jun. 30th, 2007 10:02 pm1. Interesting non-sound bite:
...mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed
--the United States Declaration of Independence
2. In high school Civics class, I was taught that in the phrase"pursuit of happiness," the word "happiness" means "property." It's not as cut-and-dried as my teacher suggested. Specifically, the phrase has been cited in various court cases arguing for people's rights to things beyond pursuit of property.
(Thing #2 brought to you by my current reading material, Dan Savage's Skipping Towards Gomorrah: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Pursuit of Happiness in America, in which he takes "pursuit of happiness" at face value.)
