Dear Election Judge,

In 2007 and 2008 we are faced with three important elections.  On September 11, 2007 and November 6, 2007 we will be holding elections for the Mayor of Baltimore City, [et al.] and March 4, 2008 for President.

I've always known that the folks running the board of elections aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer, but...did they totally forget about the general presidential elections?  I mean, I know Maryland usually goes to the Dems, and the whole electoral college dealie pretty much makes our individual votes moot, but...you'd think they'd at least stand on ceremony and still have general presidential elections.  I assume they will, but it's a strange oversight for the people that run the elections.

I don't know why I'm asking you instead of googling myself, but you seem to be pretty well informed about these sort of things... Do you know when you need to be registered before you can vote? I know it varies, but is there an average? Because I haven't been voting while in Israel mainly out of principle that since I don't live there, I shouldn't vote there, but also because I don't feel terribly connected to North Carolina politics. But I will probably be moving to somewhere in the US in July 2008. Is it correct to assume that if I register in mid-July-early-August (if I remember to register right away) that is enough time to vote in the various 2008 elections?

Probably not Presidential primaries (ours is in March 2008, and Maryland isn't one of the first states to have Presidential primaries) but for the general elections, you'll probably be fine:
