Yesterday a man in the supermarket told me I had nice hair.  I refrained from telling him that I was sorry his eyesight was failing.  (I was kind of grumpy yesterday for various reasons.)

I hate my hair. I'm thinking about getting a short haircut, but I'm kind of on the fence.  The last time I had short hair was 1987.

My mom's gmail account gets google text ads in Hebrew.  It's startling.

Was that the extent of the conversation? I always wondered how one would go about "picking up" someone at the supermarket, since it's supposed to be such a good place to meet people.

Man: You have very nice hair.
Woman: Thank you. Would you like a blow job?

(I'm not saying that would be my goal. It's just an amusing comedy skit I have in my head).

I always wonder if that's the intent when someone pays me a compliment. I am admittedly somewhat clueless but paranoid (or realistic, depending on how you see things).

That was the extent of the conversation. If he was trying to pick me up, he was very polite about it. Then again, he was an employee (stocking a shelf), so being impolite or overly forward would have been stupid.

I guess my main aversion to ever trying to talk to a woman in a grocery store or anywhere is that the mere attempt to converse will be assumed to be a sleazy pick-up attempt (as opposed to a respectful pick-up attempt that I'd rather not categorize as a pick-up attempt).

I don't really know how these things work. I once said "I'm sorry, I don't...go out with people I've met in...libraries" which wasn't really true per se, but I didn't know what else to say without being rude. I have no idea what comes off as sleazy and what doesn't...library person didn't seem sleazy. From the right person, inviting me to see their Linux desktop was awesome. I think cab drivers hitting on their passengers is always sleazy. Telling me that I have good grammar is horribly sleazy if you are a 50-year-old grad student and it's parents' weekend at college and you just hit on my mother.
