I hung up on a telemarketer today. I feel kind of guilty about it, but my experiences to date have shown that when I get calls from my credit card company trying to get me to sign up for some credit protection service, they end up refusing to take no for an answer; they continue repeating the same speech until I say yes, and then it's very difficult to cancel.
I will be polite when they say hello. I will interrupt them at the first possible juncture and tell them I'm not interested. When they continue (and they will), I will say that I am very aware of the services they offer but I'm not interested, and then hang up. Lather, rinse repeat.
